Our Man In Brussels: Peter Phok talks film finance

screen daily

Screen Daily recaps Frontiers Market with quotes from producer Peter Phok (The Roost, Beneath, Sacrement, In a Valley of Violence, etc) From the article:

Having worked with Ti West, Glass Eye Pix’s Peter Phok brought up the DIY approach to film-making and just going out there and shooting without finance necessarily in place, adding that it’s increasingly become about “taking advantage of what you have” with the lack of film funds available in the US.

“A lot of films are put together mainly through equity and now all the states have a tax credit incentive, so we’ll get a script and as much as it’s about shooting where makes sense, you have to look at those incentives and start to build your budget around those,” explained Phok.

“It’s not a privilege to be a film-maker; it’s something that if you want to do, you do it. Even when I did make money at the start of my career, it wasn’t very much. You invest in yourself and you work with what you have.”

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: THE FILMS OF LARRY FESSENDEN
As a film director, Larry Fessenden has crafted several of the most indelible and idiosyncratic horror movies of the last 25 years, from the urban vampire tale Habit to the visionary and environmental apocalypse of The Last Winter. But he’s also had a major impact on the independent filmmaking landscape as a producer of genre films, including the work of Ti West, as well as via his collaboration with the acclaimed writer-director Kelly Reichardt, who cast Fessenden as the uneasy-riding star of her breakthrough road movie River of Grass. As Fessenden’s Glass eye Pix production company celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2015, the time seems right to survey the career of a brilliantly expressive filmmaker whose clever, palpably handcrafted films honor the noble B-movie tradition of tackling social issues without sacrificing scares. This lecture, specially created for The Black Museum, will weave together critical commentary with clips from Fessenden’s films, including his recent killer-catfish film Beneath.

EW has Exciting News from the Stanley Film Festival

Entertainment Weekly has the scoop on another awesome addition to the Stanley Film Festival.

” It was announced today that the Stanley Film Festival—which takes place at the hotel from April 30 to May 3—will be paying tribute to Re-Animator director Stuart Gordon as its 2015 “Master of Horror” and will screen his 1985 cult classic. Gordon is to be presented the award by filmmaker Mick Garris, director of several King adaptations, including a 1997 mini-series version of the novelist’s famed haunted hotel book.”

And remember, “Fessenden is also one of the guests appearing at the festival and will be overseeing a special “Stanley Edition” of his Tales From Beyond The Pale audio serial in cahoots with regular collaborator Glenn McQuaid.”

Add to all that screenings of We Are Still Here, the Elijah Wood-produced The Boy, and Deathgasm, and it all makes for a pretty awesome time at the Stanley!
