Larry Fessenden is a jack of all trades within the horror genre. An actor, director, writer, producer, the filmmaker is not only one of the best auteurs in the last 20 years, but is also responsible for producing some of the most up and coming genre directors’ films. Ti West’s THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL/THE INNKEEPERS, Jim Mickle’s STAKE LAND, Adrián García Bogliano’s LATE PHASES, and the list goes on and on. Fessenden himself has been one of the most influential filmmakers in independent genre films around, having helmed such revered films as NO TELLING, HABIT, WENDIGO, THE LAST WINTER and 2013’s BENEATH. Playing such a huge part in filmmaking in all aspects of the word, Fessenden and his company, Glass Eye Pix is celebrating 30 years of auteur-driven films, with an upcoming Scream Factory boxset featuring four of Fessenden’s films, a series of screenings of Larry’s films, and now, a mini-documentary series revolving around the various films Glass Eye Pix was responsible for.

NYC’s IFC Center celebrates Glass Eye Pix’s 30th Anniversary with Glass Eye Pix: 30th Anniversary Tribute, a series of special screenings throughout October and into November. Screenings include GEP horror classics like NO TELLING and THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, as well as some of GEP’s non-horror films like WENDY AND LUCY and THE COMEDY.

A modern classic, it takes a child’s eye view of adult violence and isolation with lyrical, sometimes frightening, results. Fessenden will be here with the film and advance copies of his upcoming box set, courtesy Shout! Factory.

Join us for a night with filmmaker Larry Fessenden and a screening of his film, Habit.

Sam (Fessenden) is a spiraling alcoholic New Yorker. Still recovering from the shock of his father’s sudden death and in the midst of a break-up, Sam is looking forward to the freedom of single life: to be able to drink what he wants, when he wants. He is, in his own words, “committing suicide on the installment plan.” Sam has friends, but they are increasingly distant on account of his self destructive alcoholism. That’s when he meets Anna (Meredith Snaider) at a Halloween party, a mysterious and alluring woman who may or may not be a vampire. Sam and Anna embark on a fairly unorthodox union; Sam never sees her in daylight, and she is prone to biting during their aggressive sexual encounters. For Sam’s noncommittal self, this relationship seems ideal, but then he starts to fall dangerously ill, and Sam wonders if Anna’s love might come at a hidden cost.

This seminal work rocked the New York film scene upon its release in 1995, bringing a grounded realism to a supernatural tale in ways that invoked Cassavetes as much as Poe. In the 20 years that have followed, Fessenden has become a force in genre film with Glass Eye Pix, fostering numerous young talents such as Ti West and Kelly Reichardt, as well as going on to direct Wendigo and The Last Winter. Following the screening, Fessenden will join SpectreVision partner Daniel Noah for an in-depth discussion of his life and work.

Fantastic Fest just wrapped up, and the reviews have been pouring in for the Mickey Keating-directed GEP Psychothriller DARLING. Starring Lauren Ashley Carter and featuring Fessenden (who also starred in the Fantastic Fest flicks THE MIND’S EYE and SOUTHBOUND), the movie centers on Carter as a young woman tasked with looking after a mysterious old home.

A shocking, hallucinatory and masterful film, DARLING doesn’t just happen in front of you, it pulls you into the story of a woman who takes on the job of looking after a mansion-like home that may or may not be haunted, and throws you into her complete descent into absolute madness.

Shot entirely in black and white, the film is simply gorgeous to look at. The empty streets of New York City and  lonely hallways of the house look even more desolate without color. It was a bold decision, but it pays off in spades.

On only his third film, Keating has already established an instantly recognizable style. Call them Keating Beats: Whether it’s strobe-speed edit, a sound mix that will deliberately challenge the listener, or simply the decision to shoot in stark black and white, they constantly throw the audience off guard.

Also, it is not often that the sound design of a film stands out from all of the other elements, but in this film the complexity of the sound design sets itself apart from other films. The balance between what is real and what is not real, a strong score and jarring metal song to shake loose the audience expectations, is not an easy one. The sound in Darling totally nails the many levels or reality in DARLING.
