Now in the CINEZONE: THE PAST INSIDE THE PRESENT

Posted 11 Dec 2020

The Past Inside The Present
(2015, Dir. James Siewert, 12 mins)

Produced by Larry Fessenden and Chris Skotchdopole.

Starring Miles Joris-Peyrafitte and Schuyler Helford.

An allegorical tale of a couple who attempt to renew their dying relationship by plugging directly into recordings of their memories. When their illusion breaks, they must face the barren reality of the present.

Composed of over seven thousand frames of pen and charcoal meticulously drawn over the course of almost two years.

PAST INSIDE THE PRESENT features indie director Miles JorisPeyrafitte, known for As You Are (2016), Dreamland (2019) and Tank Girl.

James Siewert is an artist an animator who joined the glass Eye Pix family after attending Bard College in professor Kelly Reichardt’s film class. He directed several music videos for GEP and continues to pursue that art form with notable work such as “Things Like This (A Little Bit Deeper).” He has also served as director of photography on several GEP features and shorts including LIKE ME, THE RANGER, DEPRAVED (with Chris Skotchdopole), SIZE UP and THE EGG AND THE HATCHET.

Siewert is also responsible for visual effects in DEPRAVED, LIKE ME, STRAY BULLETS and FOXHOLE; he created the hand-constructed camera rigs seen in such films as DEPRAVED, LIKE ME and THE RANGER and he crafted the animations that constituted the inner workings of the brain in Fessenden’s DEPRAVED. Siewert is truly “the artist in residence” at Glass Eye Pix. For more on Siewert, visit jamessiewert.biz

DEPRAVED drops on SHUDDER in the UK

ReadySteadyCut has a review:

“well-loved auteur adapts well-loved story, and does it well”

by Alix Turner

Depraved is a sparingly gory film: it’s much more about misguided people than about the injuries they inflict. That said, Adam’s story as a whole is an emotional one… and I’m struggling to say more about that without giving away details. Back to the effects, though; which aren’t just about injuries and stitches: the film also features some beautiful flickering colors which serve to demonstrate how differently Adam’s mind works, a mind which is also trying to navigate memories and a need to belong. All these aspects are edited together with care: Fessenden clearly cares for his creation much more than Henry does.

THE COMEDY and other Rick Alverson titles now streaming on Criterion Channel

From Criterion: THE COMEDY “Never mind the title, this unsparing dissection of privilege and the limits of hipster irony is a modern tragedy. Tim Heidecker gives a fearless performance as Swanson, an aging trust-fund Brooklynite whose sole mode of interacting with the world is a repellently “transgressive” sarcasm—a crudely offensive emotional barrier that he uses to mask his profound alienation. A singularly discomforting experience that never stops pushing the envelope, THE COMEDY is one of the most provocative and polarizing films of the last decade.”

Says McQuaid: Getting our Tales out to new ears via the podcast has been a wild and rewarding ride and I can’t wait to get back to it but as I’m currently developing a feature film in Ireland it’s time to take a little break. Thank you to all the collaborators thus far, and thank you Larry Fessenden for being the best partner!

Says Fessenden: Thanks Glenn, so grateful for our partnership and for the artistic outlet that has been Tales. Thanks also to our podcast tech gurus Lee Nussbaum and James Felix McKenney. We will be back with more, just need to wrangle our collaborators and come up with a plan for a new crop of stories. Thanks to all who have stayed tuned and supported our efforts. Trailer premieres for WRACK, a new film by GEP pal James Felix McKenney

Rue Morgue has the scoop:

TRAILER PREMIERES FOR “AUTOMATONS” AND “SATAN HATES YOU” CREATOR’S MICROBUDGET “WRACK”

In the midst of the pandemic, writer/director James Felix McKenney pulled off an unusual fantasy-thriller for minimal expense.

McKenney, whose credits also include HYPOTHERMIA, also produced WRACK with veteran filmmaker J. Christian Ingvordsen (BLUE VENGEANCE, BOG CREATURES). Carol Ames, John Christian, Braxton Sohns, Emma Sugler and Jennifer Boutell star in the movie, which was filmed in Delaware County, New York. The synopsis: “In the distant future, centuries after nearly all life has been wiped out by war, disease and environmental collapse, the planet has begun to heal itself. WRACK focuses on four mutated humans who, despite being the only known people left on their world, still cannot get along. All of the characters speak in a fictional language created for the film, with subtitles in English.”

“I wanted to see how little my friends and I could make a fantasy-based feature film for,” McKenney says. “My goal was to do it for less than $1,500, and we managed to pull it off.” To keep costs down, McKenney employed no crew on WRACK, aside from the cast and the occasional helping hand. The filmmaker created the props and costumes himself, often repurposing wardrobe and hardware from Glass Eye Pix productions like Glenn McQuaid’s I SELL THE DEAD and his own AUTOMATONS. WRACK is targeting a release in 2021; keep your eyes here and sign up for the mailing list at the official website of McKenney’s Studio Midnight.
