“(Late Phases) has delivered a true love letter to ’80s monster-movie buffs and all those hankering for a good old-fashioned werewolf picture.”
Crescent Bay is not the best place to live out one’s golden years. Once an idyllic retirement community, the secluded neighbourhood has been beset by mysterious and deadly attacks. When grizzled war veteran Ambrose McKinley (Nick Damici, STAKE LAND, COLD IN JULY) moves in, the residents immediately take offense to his abrasive personality. But his take-no-prisoners attitude is just what he needs to survive as it becomes clear that the increasingly violent and patterned attacks are being caused by beasts that are neither animal nor man, and the tight-knit community of Crescent Bay is harbouring something truly sinister in its midst…
After wowing us with a succession of super-scary Spanish-language fright flicks (ROOMS FOR TOURISTS, COLD SWEAT, PENUMBRA), director Adrián García Bogliano makes his English-language debut with LATE PHASES, the new production of Larry Fessenden’s fan-friendly Glass Eye Pix and Dark Sky Films. With LATE PHASES, this terrifying triumvirate has delivered a true love letter to ’80s monster-movie buffs and all those hankering for a good old-fashioned werewolf picture. And we do mean old-fashioned — LATE PHASES boasts frighteningly effective man-in-a-suit creatures and not that CGI crap that marred recent movies like the WOLFMAN remake. Plus the film offers a complete roster of ’80s horror movie players, such as THE MONSTER SQUAD’s Tom Noonan, HALLOWEEN II’s Lance Guest, AMITYVILLE HORROR II’s Rutanya Alda, HE KNOWS YOU’RE ALONE’s Caitlin O’Heaney and many more. Ever wonder what happened to John Travolta’s girlfriend from SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER? Well, Karen Lynn Gorney’s here too! Even Tina Louise swam in from GILLIGAN’S ISLAND for a cameo! Lead Damici (in Clint Eastwood mode) anchors these genre all-stars as the film’s grumpy-old-man-turned-monster-hunter. Finally, you’ll catch major full-moon fever during LATE PHASES’ incredible old-school transformation scene (orchestrated by FROM DUSK TILL DAWN’s Robert Kurtzman). Now that’s something to howl about!
