Not only is The Ranger a return in form to the 90’s slashers but it’s also a glorious revisitation to the punk horrors of the 80’s and Wexler and company capture the tone and look of the period beautifully (helped made possible by the raddest punk/producer Heather Buckley). The cast all look the part, sporting realistic gear and listening to an insane playlist including bands like Rotten U.K., Fang, The Atom Age, and at least a half-dozen more that will have you headbanging along with the characters on screen. The van they travel in is a rolling love letter to Return of The Living Dead and every frame oozes punk aesthetic. The juxtaposition of punk leather and color against the backdrop of the national park is surreal but mesmerizing and you won’t be able to look away. The parallel between this film and Green Room is sure to be made and The Ranger stands shoulder to shoulder with it as a return to punks on film.

We invite you to revisit Ilya Chaiken’s LIBERTY KID.
An indie gem that portrays the hardships of returning home from war.
“There may have been two or three dozen American films that struggled to make sense of 9/11 and its aftermath, but none of them have done more with less than “Liberty Kid”… It’s a simple story, engagingly told, wonderfully acted and shot with an eye for the beauty of the Big Apple’s unglamorous outer-borough neighborhoods.”

eFilm Critic: THE RANGER “A slasher that goes back to the 1980s woods to great effect.”
“The Ranger” is a damn fine 1980s throwback slasher that does every facet of the genre just a little better than you might expect. That’s not necessarily enough to earn a recommendation – enough movies are made about folks getting cut up with an axe every year that even with a 95% failure rate, that’s a fair amount of “pretty decent” – but Jenn Wexler hits the sweet spot here, making a movie that’s got something on its mind aside from the genre itself but still manages to be bloody and entertaining before everything else.
