Jeff Grace

Jeff Grace got his start providing various music services for Howard Shore including music preparation, producing, and editing. In 2005 his debut feature film score The Roost (2005) established an enduring relationship with indie-darling director Ti West which continues to this day. It’s a score of uncompromising creativity harnessing the unique sound qualities of chamber strings and a superlative example of “less-is-more” precision scoring.

What intrigues me the most about Grace’s music is that with each new score he composes, his work seems to be getting better. I was nearly knocked out of my seat by his dark retro music for The House of the Devil (2009) and his score for The Innkeepers (2011) is a horror masterwork which ended up #6 on my list of favorite film scores that year.

Grace’s music is thoughtfully composed lacking any of the “canned” samples or loops that are so prevalent in modern scores. Even when technology is brought into his music, the work of the artist prevails over the work of the computer. Grace’s music is wholly original yet each is cut from the fabric of nostalgia. It’s also wildly unpredictable. Throughout my tenure as a film music journalist I’ve interviewed a bunch of different composers; however, I’ve never been offered the opportunity to interview Jeff Grace. He seems to avoid the usual social media and public relation services that so many composers utilize. If you’re reading this Jeff, email me. I’d love to do an interview with you sometime.

Hey NYC! Tonight Fessenden’s BENEATH plays the Philip K Dick Film Festival at Indiescreen in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Over 35 shorts and features from the sci-fi, fantasy and horror genres will be screened at the festival over the course of the weekend.

BENEATH starts at 9:55pm tonight. Earlier in the evening, GEP pal Eric Pennycoff’s space short, The Pod, will screen.

Directed by Larry Fessenden (The Last Winter, Wendigo), the story concerns six high school seniors who find themselves in a rowboat in the middle of a lake attacked by man-eating fish. The twist? They must decide who must be sacrificed as they fight their way back to shore.

“TDC Entertainment, under its Shelter Island banner, has acquired DVD and nontheatrical North American rights to Glass Eye Pix’s documentary American Jesus. Gravitas Ventures will handle all VOD and broadcast rights for the film.

Aram Garriga’s portrait of Christianity in American culture had its world premiere at the Woodstock Film Festival, followed by its international premiere at the Sitges Film Festival. For the film, Garriga traveled from his native Barcelona to the U.S. to chronicle the relationship between faith, materialism, politics and personal passions on the American scene.

“American Jesus highlights the uniquely diverse set of relationships that Americans have with religion. What I loved in the movie is that it achieves an editorial balance such that both secular and religious audiences will find something to love and something to hate,” said Gary Baddeley, CEO of TDC Entertainment.

Glass Eye plans a select 15 market theatrical release in March and April, followed by its release on and date release on DVD, VOD and iTunes on May 13.

The film is a co-production with Glass Eye Pix, the New York-based production company headed by Larry Fessenden, and Spain-based Zabriskie Films, Visualsuspects, TVE & TV3.”
