“Kelly is very warm and very loyal with a select few people,” he answers. “She’s just a private person. She believes in the work first, and is a little wary of the pomp and circumstance of press, and even for that matter talking about her work and her motivations.”
Fessenden, for his own part, has “never been shy” when it comes to interviews, but thinks there’s room for more than one approach. “You have the Hitchcock model; I think he was incredibly articulate, and brought a great deal to cinema by talking about his process. But there’s also Kubrick, who stopped doing interviews right when he became most intriguing, and as a result, his films are deeply haunting.”
Reichardt might lean towards the latter extreme, but, Fessenden concludes, that’s “extremely charming in this day in age, where everybody is flappin’ their gums at every opportunity!”

NYC’s IFC Center celebrates Glass Eye Pix’s 30th Anniversary with Glass Eye Pix: 30th Anniversary Tribute, a series of special screenings throughout October and into November. Screenings include GEP horror classics like NO TELLING and THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, as well as some of GEP’s non-horror films like WENDY AND LUCY and THE COMEDY.
Indiewire reports that Kelly Reichardt’s partially Kickstarter-funded, newly restored version of RIVER OF GRASS picked for prestigious TIFF Cinematheque. Fessenden stars alongside Lisa Bowman in this 1994 film.
In addition to its stellar slate of new titles and emerging talent, the Toronto International Film Festival is dedicated to paying respect to the cinema — and masters — that have come before the latest and greatest in contemporary film talent. As part of the initiative, the festival boasts two unique programs — TIFF Cinematheque, which focuses on previously released classics, and Masters of Cinema, which features new films from, well, masters of cinema — and both sections have now revealed their slate for the 2015 festival.
EXCLUSIVE FROM DEADLINE: Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has closed a worldwide rights deal for the untitled film that Kelly Reichardt just wrapped in Montana. Starring Laura Dern, Kristen Stewart, Michelle Williams, Rosanna Arquette, James LeGros, Jared Harris and Lily Gladstone, the film is a series of vignettes that revolve around the lives of people in small-town Montana. Reichardt wrote the script based on short stories by Maile Meloy.
Reichardt previously directed Night Moves, Meek’s Cutoff and Wendy And Lucy. Neil Kopp, Vincent Savino and Anish Savjani of filmscience are producing. Todd Haynes and Larry Fessenden are the exec producers.
Laura Dern is in talks to join the cast of Glass Eye Pix pal Kelly Reichardt’s newest project, which already lined up Jared Harris, James Le Gros, and Michelle Williams. Fessenden Executive Produces the project along with Todd Haynes.

Also included as a Bonus Feature is her remarkable debut film, RIVER OF GRASS (1994), never previously available in the UK. Other Bonus Features include audio of a masterclass given by Kelly Reichardt at Oxford University in 2014, the short stories by Jonathan Raymond upon which OLD JOY and WENDY AND LUCY are based, and a booklet written by long-time Reichardt collaborator Larry Fessenden.
